Overall bounce rate is up but no individual traffic source's bounce changed much

Learned so far:

  • Site conversions are down but traffic is not
  • Site conversion rates are down
  • Overall bounce rate is up but no individual traffic source's bounce changed enough to account for the increase in bounces

This wizard ends here. But you should check with Marketing on the following
  • This surprising situation can happen when the composition of your traffic changes towards channels where you have had higher bounce rates historically.
  • (Say, your bounce rate with email campaigns is 30% and your bounce rate with PPC is 20%. So, if more of your traffic now is coming from email vs. previously from PPC you would have an overall increased bounce rate.)
  • To confirm, run a report on your traffic sources in Unica NetInsight. Then do a date comparison analysis between current vs. last period prior to the issues. Watch whether traffic has shifted to channels with higher than average bounce rates
  • Work with Marketing to counter act, e.g. experiment with landing pages to bring those channels' bounce rates down.
